Arturo Dazzi e Marcello Piacentini: un lungo sodalizio

2020

The paper investigates the collaboration between an artist and an architect who were among the main protagonists of the Italian cultural scene of the first half of the twentieth century: Arturo Dazzi and Marcello Piacentini. Starting from the plaster model which portrays them together and that reproduces a detail of a monumental work conceived by both between 1924 and 1931, the Arco ai Caduti of Genoa, the analysis will briefly focus on the occasions when the two characters collaborated for the realization of monumental civil and religious works until the post-war period. This case is a significant example of the conception and debate about the relationship between the figurative arts and t…

The Eradication of Poliomyelitis in Spain: Projects, Obstacles, Achievements, Realities

2015

he main aim of our paper is to provide a historical approach to the complex process undertaken in Spain to achieve the official WHO certificate of polio eradication in 2002, within the framework of the initiatives launched in the WHO European Region. At the time of the first meeting of the European Regional Commission for the Certification of Poliomyelitis Eradication in 1996, the epidemiological situation and levels of vaccination cover (over 90%) enabled Spain, like other countries, to ensure compliance with the conditions set by the World Health Organization. This showed that the country, at the end of the twentieth century, had achieved high public health standards, which is remarkable …

From mental hygiene to mental health: ideology, discourses and practices in Franco’s Spain (1939–75)

2017

Based on an analysis of the discourses, the ideological appropriation and the practical influence of mental hygiene in Spanish psychiatry during the early years of the Francoist regime, this article examines its decline and subsequent replacement by the new concept of mental health promoted by the World Health Organization and other international bodies from the mid-twentieth century. The old approach, essentially focused on the prophylaxis of insanity within the framework of a set of interventionist policies of social defence, was thus transformed from the beginning of the 1960s into a much more ambitious and comprehensive project which sought to promote the psychosocial balance and perfo…

Re-drawing of vanished space: Casa Giobbe della Bitta by Marcello Piacentini

2020

Hilbert’s Early Career

2018

David Hilbert’s remarkable career falls into two clearly distinct periods: the quiet Konigsberg phase, which spanned the period from his birth on 23 January 1862 to that of his full maturity as one of Germany’s leading mathematicians, followed by the tumultuous Gottingen years. The latter began with his appointment in Gottingen in 1895 and ended with his death on 14 February 1943 when Nazi Germany had already entered its death throes. It would be difficult to exaggerate the contrast between these two phases, just as it remains difficult to picture life in Germany before the onset of the two world wars that so decisively shaped the course of twentieth century history.

The treatment of madness in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries: discourses about curability in Spanish mental health care, 1890-1917

2016
